Lent 2020 at St Mary Abbots

The Holy Season of Lent, our annual preparation for the commemoration of the Suffering, Crucifixion and Resurrection of Jesus Christ, is a time for spiritual development and growth - mirroring nature’s springtime all around us.   This growth is based on a greater-than-usual focus on and attention to the things of God, which leads to the austerity and fasting and general simplification of life that characterises the season.   Here at St Mary Abbots we offer again a rich diet to assist in this preparation:  sermons, prayer, devotions, study.    The programme is set out below, and we hope that one or more of these series will help YOU in your life of faith and discipleship.

But this is not to be a time purely for introspection, where we concentrate on ourselves and ignore everything around us.   We grow closer to God by following the example of Jesus in his work of compassion, healing and reconciliation.   In Lent, as always, we simply cannot love God without loving our neighbours.

MAY WE ALL THIS LENT FOLLOW THE WAY OF JESUS

ST MARY ABBOTS Lenten 2020 STUDY PROGRAMME

OUR LENTEN CHARITABLE GIVING:
We’ll only grow in the Christian life if we grow in our generosity and love for those in need, so we offer these opportunities for sacrificial giving:

On Mothering Sunday all our collections are devoted to:
St Andrew’s Clinics for Children
http://www.standrewsclinics.org.uk/
STACC supports basic primary health care to children and their mothers in Sierra Leone, Nigeria, Zanzibar, Kenya and Ghana, in sub-Saharan Africa.
We know this charity very well and vouch for its remarkable work: it makes the most significant difference to the most impoverished communities

Tuesday Study Group:
Care for God's Creation
This Lent, we hope that both adults and children might in engage in God's plea for us to "Care for God's Creation".  It is an opportunity for us to rebuild our relationship with our planet, and in turn with the God who is Lord of everything.  During this time we hope you might engage n prayer, learn more about the remarkable world we have been given and build habits that last beyond the season to protect and honour the earth.

Our 10.30am Tuesday study groups at the Church in the Holland Chapel are on the following subjects:

3rd March:       Light and Energy
10th March:    Water
17th March:    Land and Plants
24th March:    Stars and Seasons
31st March:     Creatures of the sea and sky

A booklet produced by the Church of England which is full of reflections and Actions that can be taken over the Lentern period.   Copies are avaialable in the church and from the vestry.
