RAILINGS RESTORATION PROJECT
The beautiful and ornate railings around the churchyard have, over the last century, have become warped and rusted, and in some places potentially dangerous to members of the public who use the space around the church. This is particularly evident to the West of the church, where we allow the school to use our churchyard as a playground. Images below show how the whole fence line has started to list inwards and the gate, which opens into the church yard, is at an angle, with all of its significant weight resting on one rusty hinge. Shutting this each night takes a not inconsiderable effort. Once shut the two sides no longer meet, so we have to wrestle with a padlock to secure the gates (see photos below)
We are very grateful to the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, who are responsible for the maintenance of any area of "closed" burial ground, have started work on the restoration of the railings, the first section (the West Gates) being removed this week, 12th March 2025.
A temporary gate has been installed to keep the children safe during the day, and the church safe at night. We will keep you updated as things progress!
