Drop by this beautiful, almost jewel-box church to view its lovely stained glass windows. The lofty spire is the tallest in London, and notable parishioners included Sir Isaac Newton and Beatrix Potter. If you're fortunate enough to catch a moment when there's less hustle and bustle inside, use your time for prayer and reflection.   it's a lovely break from the modern madness outside!  Anon.

Hiring the Church

St Mary Abbots is available to hire for concerts, charity or community events, school services, lectures and fairs.
We can seat 434 in the main body of the church and 750 when using the side pews and chapels.

If you are interested in hiring the church please contact Leonora, our Events Co-ordinator, HERE who will discuss your event, date and then  send you the hire costs and booking contract.

There are several options for hire available:
  • Lunchtime events: Rehearsals / set up in the morning followed by the event starting at 1pm or 2pm.
  • Evening events:  Rehearsals / set up during the day with a break for our midday Eucharist (morning Eucharist at 9.30 am on Thursday) with the events starting at 6.30 pm or 7pm.   Projector, small screen and microphones are available.  It is possible to serve food (cold canapes / mince pies etc) and drink before or after the event.
  • Shared profit events:   Nominal fee in order to confirm booking and to provide you with PR on our church networks.   Any profits, after the hire fee and (if required) piano tuning fee, to be shared between the event organiser and church.
  • Midday Eucharist for visiting musicians / choirs: if you would like to become part of the midday Eucharist we have a dedicated service sheet for visiting musicians, where you could chose to provide music for the reflection, the anthems, a Psalm, the Gloria etc.   Please contact Leonora for further information.

Things we can't offer

Filming
Unfortunately we have found that the church is not particularly suitable for filming, set as it is next to a busy road and school, with two services each day in the church, open to the public all day, with numerous local groups meeting and many other events throughout the year.   The fixtures and fittings are listed - the insurance as a result prohibitive - and the pews are fixed and can not be moved accept in one area.   There are no greenrooms for cast or crew and storage areas to keep equipment safe from the public.  The cloister, which we are frequently asked about, is used by members of the public and school parents so it is not possible to close it for a shoot - film or photography.

If you are not put off by this and still wish to film here then please email Leonora HERE with the script and story line, dates and times, your budget and any other information you think relevant.

Your request will be passed by the clergy and staff, followed by the PCC and the Diocese.  No filming make take place in a church without this approval.

Rehearsal Space

Our organ and piano are not available for individual students or members of the public to practice or rehearse on.  We receive many of these requests, but the church is a place of peace and worship for visiting members of the public when not in use by one of our regular groups.  There is also a duty of care that the instruments are in working order for our services, Royal college of Music concerts and other events at the church,  and additionally  they are not insured for regular rehearsals.  If you are a member of the RCM and wish to arrange a one off rehearsal please contact Leonora.

Hire as a wedding venue
All weddings at our church are conducted by our clergy and only for people who have a qualifying connection to us (you can find out more HERE).  We are not available as 'a space' or as a backdrop for wedding photoshoots for couples that have already married.
